Este tipo de v\u00e1lvula se abre y cierra autom\u00e1ticamente por la fuerza generada por el flujo del propio medio en la tuber\u00eda y pertenece a una v\u00e1lvula autom\u00e1tica. Las v\u00e1lvulas de retenci\u00f3n se utilizan en sistemas de tuber\u00edas. Sus principales funciones son evitar el reflujo del medio, la inversi\u00f3n de las bombas y sus motores de accionamiento, y la liberaci\u00f3n del medio en los contenedores. Las v\u00e1lvulas de retenci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n pueden utilizarse en tuber\u00edas para alimentar sistemas auxiliares en los que la presi\u00f3n puede aumentar por encima de la presi\u00f3n del sistema principal.
