If the supply is otherwise fine, isolate the gate valve if possible. Closing other valves, or stop-taps, up and downstream could save mess and irritation later. Position a bowl or bucket beneath the valve if possible; otherwise, stuff towels around the area.

Penetrating Oil

Penetrating oil usually works to free gate valves that are seized for no other reason than lack of use. The lubricating oil found in almost every home, garage, and workshop in the U.S. is not -- contrary to popular opinion -- a penetrating oil. Its use will do little more than making the gate valve slippery and more difficult to work on. True penetrating oils can be found in auto parts stores and, occasionally, in the auto aisles of department stores. Clean away any verdigris or atmospheric deposits from the gate valve's visible threads, follow the oil manufacturer's directions for use and wait time, then tap the valve gently but firmly with a lightweight hammer to jar free any foreign matter gluing up the threads and try to open it as normal. Use a non-flammable penetrating oil in case the subsequent application of heat is necessary.

Additional Leverage

If the gate valve is still stuck after using the penetrating oil at least three times, try extending the leverage you have on the handle. Slip a sturdy screwdriver blade through the tines of the handle or use a pair of vise grips on the stem. Support the valve with your free hand so as to prevent the force you apply with the lever from being transferred to the pipe and very gradually increase the pressure until the seize breaks or you fear continuing will bend the pipes on either side of the valve.

Heat

Heat is often used to free up two metal components that have become bonded; nuts locked onto bolts by rust are almost certainly the most common use. The idea is to make one component of the valve heat up much faster than the other so that one expands while the other doesn't, causing the unwanted bond to crack. Heating slowly, therefore, does not work. Only an extremely hot flame will work, such as a soldering blow-torch or a welding or cutting torch. Caution must be used to avoid scorching or setting fire to the gate valve's surroundings. Use the heat source judiciously -- do not leave the flame in contact with the valve for so long that any washers catch fire or liquefy and begin to leak -- then apply leveraged pressure immediately.

How to Disassemble a Stuck Gate Valve

ate valves are typically screwed to a wall or between two pieces of piping. Before removing it, you can attempt to unclog the valve using just the water in the system. Turn the water source on as high as possible, then slowly open and close the valve as fully as it will let you. This could loosen some debris and allow you to close the gate valve fully.

If this doesn't do the trick, you should turn off the water source and remove the valve from the pipeline. This is typically done by unscrewing the ends. Once the valve is disconnected, use pliers to loosen the gate valve's bonnet, as shown in the picture. Do not loosen the packing nut, as it is what holds the components together that keep fluid from leaking up the stem.

When you have unscrewed the bonnet, you will be able to remove the top of the gate valve, with the handle and seating, from the body. This will allow you to clean your valve from the top, using a toothbrush or other cleaning tool.

How to Rebuilt A Stuck Gate Valve

Congratulations! Your gate valve is clean and clear! Now all that's left is to put it together. This is a simple process if you have only disconnected the bonnet. Slide the gate back into the proper position in the valve's body then screw the gate valve bonnet until secure. Test the valve by turning the handle. Ensure that the gate opens and closes fully. Once you are sure it is working properly, put it back into its place in the pipeline, using fresh pipe dope or sealant tape.

A malfunctioning gate valve is not difficult to repair, but it is even easier to prevent. The use of solvent cement glue can also clog up the ball, causing it to stick to the inside of the valve and resist turning. If this happens, you’ll want to take the valve apart and clean out any grime you see.

Another frequent ball valve failure occurs when the elastic used to seal the valve (often in the form of an O-ring) gets worn down over time due to liquid or gas getting pushed through it. Since this is a natural symptom of use, you’ll want to swap out the elastic when you notice cracks or leakage. Turning down the intensity of liquid flowing through the valve can also help extend the lifespan of the O-ring.

As the elastic starts to go, so too does the inner packing of the valve stem. Any scratching or damage to the valve stem requires someone to either replace the stem or the whole valve before the whole thing falls apart.

Make sure to look for leak points at the nuts holding the bolts in as well. This indicates that the nuts are too loose or that the end connector needs realignment. Damage to O-rings around the nuts can also prove a culprit of these leaks.

How to Open A Stuck Ball Valve?

Ball valves are commonly used valves for main water and various branch shutoffs. This valve functions as an ON/OFF valve which means that the valve should be either completely open allowing full flow, or completely closed, stopping the entire water flow. Occasionally, it may be necessary to loosen a ball valve because it is stuck or tight, thereby creating an obstruction to fluid flow. If a ball valve won’t open, perform the following steps to rectify the issue:

Manual operation

Turn off the main water supply.

Then, loosen the valve by opening and closing it multiple times by turning its handle.

Gently hammer the valve body multiple times on the valve body to break and free up the particles that are trapped between the ball and the valve body.

Gently wiggle and rock the valve handle to help service the ball element and force it to move. Also, try to remove the valve handle and turn the valve a few times using a plier to help it move freely, and place the handle back on the valve using its screw. If these steps don’t work, move on to step 2.

A gate valve is also called a sluice valve. The sediment becomes lodged between the gate that lowers and the inside of the valve body itself. Ball-type valves do not suffer from this problem, as they operate on a different principle than a gate that raises and lowers inside of the valve body.

Gate Valve Stuck Closed

A gate valve for a property usually has to be closed if plumbing repairs or maintenance are needed inside the building. In some instances, particularly if the main control valve is a gate type valve, the valve may not close completely. In many cases a gate valve repair may be needed. But many times other remedies are available.

How to Open a Stuck Gate Valve?

The typical reaction when a gate valve will not close fully is to exert additional force on the handle. Using force to close a valve is absolutely the wrong response. Brute force can cause permanent damage to the valve and a loss of water supply to the building. If sediment or mineral deposits are preventing the gate valve from closing fully, there is a more sensible first step to take than brute force.

The first step if a gate valve will not close completely

If sediment or mineral deposits are preventing a gate from closing completely an attempt should be made to flush out the inside of the valve. The proper way to do this is to open a faucet on a sink inside the house so there is a flow of water. Then gently and repeatedly open and close the valve.

If the handle of the valve does not turn freely then loosen the packing nut just above the valve body and around the stem of the valve. Loosening it just one turn should be fine – just remember to tighten it back up when you are done. Every time you lower the gate some sediment will break free and be flushed away by the water flow. There is absolutely no harm or danger in how many times you do this as long as no excessive force is used.

How to Fix a Stuck Gate Valve?

If the gate valve becomes jammed or stuck and remains closed, the gate valve stops operating and blocks the water from entering the water tanks. To open a stuck gate value you need to follow the steps suggested below.

Step 1: Finding the Valve

First, you need to find the valve. Check whether the problem is with the gate valve. A gate valve has the shape of a wedge. The water flows in a straight line in the gate valves. The flow of water is usually stopped by the valve (this acts like a gate). The gate valve does the following functions. When it opens wide, it leaves an opening for water to flow. The opening is of the same size as the pipe which is entering and leaving the valve.

Step 2: Problem Identification

Stop the water supply in the valve which is creating the problem. Isolate the area where you are working. This is done to reduce the chances of further leaks. Check whether there are any external factors that are causing the valve to function inappropriately. Reasons may be due to excess cold or a damaged water line. Keep a bucket under the valve which is causing the problem, if it has to be removed and replaced. Some gate valves will not be opened and closed timely. This may affect the operation of the valve.

Step 3: Fixing the Valve

A light coat of penetrating oil or 3-in-one oil is applied to the valve and excess oil is wiped off using a waste cloth or rags. The oil must get to the threads. Using the wrench or a hammer, tap the valve and see if the valve opens. On the valve handle, channel locks or an adjustable wrench may be attached. Additional leverage can be achieved by using a rag or gloves that prevent slipping while working. Work in such a way that the surface remains stable. Use a pipe wrench for support so that it does not damage the neighboring pipes. The handle is then warmed by using a hair drier. You can also use a blowtorch if, extreme cold is the cause of the block.

Gate Valve Probelms & Repair Gate Valve | ZECO Valve

<meta property="og:description" content="Gate valves are very common in pipeline applications, so the chance of problems will naturally be high, today ZECO Valve introduces you ...
