What is V Notch Ball Valve?

The V–Notch Ball Valve gives non-clogging, high capacity, straight-through flow control of fluids containing pulp and paper stock or slurries and fluids containing suspended solids or fibrous materials.

V-Notch Ball Valve is a quarter turn valve with a segment Ball. The V-Ball creates a wedging and shearing effect to prevent the dragging of stock or slurry between the ball and its seal.

V Notch Ball Valve – ball control valves are superior to competitors due to high-performance standards. Stainless steel ball valves, industrial or sanitary in design, are some of the many choices offered. Three-piece, flanged, double union, two-piece, three-way, grooved end, and high-pressure ball valves are perfect for the many ways ball valves are used in today’s market.

Most have direct mount actuator capabilities, some are available with appropriate actuators such as electric or pneumatic. This classic quarter turn style allows complete control over flow where the passageway needs to be completely closed. The ball valve can also provide a three-way option at points in the control loop requiring a T or L formation and the ability to shut off one or all of the connections.

V Notch Ball Valve – ball control valves work very well in situations where they are required to be idle for long periods of time, developing a few problems with inactivity. Whatever the flow requirement, there is a ball valve that can be considered appropriate for it, from the full port ball valve offering no flow restriction since the hole bored in the ball is the same size as the passage, to the standard port ball valve allowing a smaller flow with the bore in a ball the size of the passage itself, and including reduced port ball valves allowing significant flow restriction due to smaller bores in smaller balls. Any type of flow restriction can be completely shut off in high-pressure situations by actuating the rotation of the valve and sealing the passageway shut.

- Standard round ported ball valves have been used, and continue to be used, for many control applications such as services involving moderate pressure drops. Now, with the development of Flow-Tek’s characterized V-balls, a full range of control applications is available with superior flow control. These 1/4-turn control ball valves are more compact, lighter-weight, and much less expensive than comparably sized globe valves and segmented control valves offered by other companies. Flow-Tek control valves offer fast response times to control signals due to advanced digital control of actuation and the inherent strengths of ball valves. These valves exceed Class VI offering bubble-tight shutoff with zero leakage. Exceptional Characterized Control
- Flow-Tek’s characterized balls provide predictable and accurate control of downstream flow rates. These precision-cut balls match the control performance of globe valves while offering the economy, features, and reduced size and weight of ball valves. Flow-Tek offers a wide range of V-Port and Slotted Port characterized balls. The standard characterized balls and an example of a custom ball are shown above. The 90° and 60° balls, like standard round hole balls, offer an equal percentage of inherent flow characteristics. A slotted ball and a V-Port ball with a small angle opening, such as a 15° ball, furnish a linear inherent flow characteristic. medium angle V-Port valves such as a 30° ball furnish a modified equal percentage inherent flow characteristic. Custom ports are also available to meet special control requirements. Designed with flexibility in process conditions in mind, the Cv and control characteristics are easily changed by simply changing the ball.
High Rangeability
- The characterized ball delivers controllable flow characteristics from the nearly closed to the fully open position of the valve. Though the port type and valve size affect the rangeability, Flow-Tek characterized balls have a minimum rangeability of 200:1 and can exceed 800:1. Flow rates are highly repeatable within the normal 20% – 80% range of travel.
High Flow Capacity
- Flow-Tek’s control ball valves have been designed to offer maximum flow characteristics that are substantially higher than comparably sized globe valves. The inherent flow pattern of ball valves increases flow rates and in many applications valves smaller than pipeline size can be used. The self-cleaning action of the ball against the seat makes the ball valve acceptable for slurry and high fiber media services.
High-Pressure Drops
- Engineered to withstand high-pressure drops while providing leak-free operation, the V-Control Series delivers the precision control required by today’s process industries. The δP limit for liquids is up to 500psi and steam is up to 300psi. Please consult the factory or your distributor for information on control valve sizing and pressure drop limitations.

CALCULATE V NOTCH VALVE SIZE

With the above information, the following steps are used to correctly size a valve in a piping system.

Cv value is obtained by using the appropriate ANSI/ISA–75.01.01 flow sizing formula or computer-aided flow control sizing program that is based on these formulas.
Cavitation is checked by using the FL value (Liquid Pressure Recovery Factor), and the expansion factor needed for compressible fluids is obtained using the values (Pressure Drop Ratio Factor). Both values are found in the Cv charts supplied on the following pages.
Select a nominal valve size from the Cv charts based on the calculated Cv.
V-Port Ball Valves: Select a valve that offers calculated Cv for the minimum and maximum flow between 20% to 80% of port opening.
Round Port Ball Valves: Select a valve that offers calculated Cv for the minimum and maximum flow between 30% to 80% of port opening.
Select the valve type (flanged, threaded, or welded) and materials of construction.

Ball Valve Types

The most common type of ball valve is two-way, which allows linear flow from inlet to outlet. Three-way and four-way ball valves, on the other hand, allow flow in multiple directions, including 90-degree angles. The four main body styles include fully welded, three-piece bodies (side entry or end entry), split, and top entry. The operation of each type of valve is essentially is the same. Ball valves are available with three basic types of orifice: full port ball valve, reduced port (standard port) ball valve, and V port ball valve.

What are Floating Ball Valves?

As the name suggests, floating ball valves use a through-size ball-free structure to close off a cross-section of pipe and stop the flow of fluid. Now, the main feature of a floating ball valve is that the ball is not supported by the structure, so it remains suspended in the fluid and is held in place by the valve seat.

How do Floating Ball Valves work?

Normal floating ball valve fully open, both sides of the unobstructed valve, forming a straight pipe channel, two-way seal, with the self-cleaning performance of the best features, suitable for particularly unclean, two cutting off occasions containing fiber media. Ball core in the process of opening and closing the valve is always friction with the valve, at the same time, the seal between the spool and the seat is achieved by the seat pressure to the ball core pre-tight sealing force, but because of the soft seal seat its excellent mechanical and physical properties, making its seal is particularly good.

What are V Ball valves?

V ball valves also called semiball valves, provide non-clogging, high capacity, straight-through flow control of fluids containing pulp and paper feedstock or slurry and fluids containing suspended solids or fibrous materials. V ball valves are also called V-notch ball valves or segmented ball valves that combine the toughness of a globe valve with the efficiency of a rotary valve, with a “V” seat or a “V” ball, where the shearing action between the ball and seat gives smooth, non-clogging operation and prevents the slurry or slurry from dragging between the ball and its seal. This type of valve is also known as a control valve as the flow rate needs to be controlled according to the application.

How do V Notch Ball valves work?

V-notch edge, cut off impurities. When the V-notch ball valve is closed and starts to open, the small end of the “V” opens first. This allows for consistent flow control at this stage. This design usually requires a more robust construction, as higher fluid velocities can damage standard valves. Applications of V Ball valves

V Ball valves are used in many applications and markets. These can include transfer and storage, gas handling, and industry to name but a few. V-port ball valves are also commonly used in water treatment, food processing, acid transfer, agriculture, bleach, acid leaching, waste treatment, and pharmaceuticals.

Advantages of V Ball valves

1. More Efficiency
- V ball valve with the efficiency of a quarter turn ball valve and the traditional characteristics of a globe valve.
2. High Flow Capacity
- The V-port design allows the media to flow directly through the valve without turning, which minimizes the pressure drop across the valve. The V-ball valve also has a higher flow coefficient (Cv) than other similar-sized control valve types; this means that the same flow rate can be achieved with a smaller V-ball valve as with a similar control valve of a larger size. For medium flow is unobstructed, helping to reduce cavitation, turbulence, and erosion of the valve.
3. High Shut-Off Pressure
- V-ball valves feature a quarter turn (90°) of the ball, allowing them to operate and close at higher operating pressures. Because of this, smaller, low-torque actuators can be used, resulting in cost savings and increased efficiency in the user’s application.
4. Bubble Tight Shut-Off
- The V ball valve is designed as a “floating ball principle”, which not only has the function of regulating flow control but also provides bubble-tight closure. When the valve is closed, upstream pressure pushes the ball against the downstream seat, thereby strengthening the seal. These valves can control or shut off flow in both directions, which proves particularly effective in gas applications. v-port ball valves eliminate the need for additional valves, saving the user money and reducing the overall number of components in the system.
