Types of Butterfly Valves

Wafer Butterfly Valve

Wafer concentric butterfly valve features a cartridge-type seat, streamlined disc, and strong stem-to-disc connection for easy use in industrial applications such as food and beverage, pulp and paper, chemical, mining, water treatment, power plants, etc.

Lug Butterfly Valve

This type of design has lugs attached to the valve body. Dead-end connections are the common uses for this type of butterfly valve.

What is API 609 A Butterfly Valve?

API 609 is the American design standard for butterfly valves divided into Categories A and B.

Category A valves are “concentric” type. Also known as rubber-lined butterfly valves. These are popular in low-pressure systems (Class 150 or less), relatively lower cycle life, and rubber liners are also good for abrasive slurry services.

Category B valves are “offset” type, meaning the shaft is offset from the disc so that they can handle higher differential pressures. Most offset types cause the disc to rotate freely from the seat after a few degrees of rotation, which minimizes seat wear and increases valve cycle life. The offset type can have rubber, polymer (PTFE or other), metal &graphite, or even metal seats. Lots of variety makes these suitable for various temperatures and pressures.

API 6D

Specification for Pipeline Valves, API Specification 6D is an adoption of ISO 14313: 1999, Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries-Pipeline Transportation Systems-Pipeline Valves. This International Standard specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, manufacturing, testing and documentation of ball valves, check valves, gate valves and plug valves for application in pipeline systems.

API 600

Bolted Bonnet Steel Gate Valves for Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries – Modified National Adoption of ISO 10434:1998.

API 602

Compact Steel Gate Valves – Flanged, Threaded, Welded, and Extended-Body Ends. The standard covers threaded end, socket-welded end, butt-welded end, and flanged end compact carbon steel gate valves in sizes of NPS4 and the smaller.

API 609

Butterfly Valves: Double Flanged, Lug Type and Wafer Type. The standard covers design, materials, face-to-face dimensions, pressure and temperature ratings, and examination, inspection, and test requirements for gray iron, ductile iron, bronze, steel, nickel-base alloy, or special alloy butterfly valves that provide tight shutoff in the closed position and are suitable for flow regulation.

API 594

Check Valves: Flanged, Lug, Wafer Type and Butt-welded. API Standard 594 covers design, material, face-to-face dimensions, pressure and temperature ratings, and examination, inspection, and test requirements for two types of check valves.

API 598

For Valve Inspection and Testing, the standard covers inspection, supplementary examination, and pressure test requirements for both resilient seated and metal-to-metal seated gate valves, globe valves, plug valves, ball valves, check valves, and butterfly valves, pertaining to inspection by the purchaser and to any supplementary examinations the purchaser may require at the valve manufacturer’s plant.

API 607

Fire Test for Soft-Seated Quarter Turn Valves, the standard covers the requirements for testing and evaluating the performance of straightway, soft seated quarter-turn valves when the valves are exposed to certain fire conditions defined in this standard. The procedures described in this standard are applied to all classes and sizes of such valves that are made of materials listed in ASME B16.34.

API 6FA

Specification for Fire Test for Valves, the standard covers the requirements for testing and evaluating the performance of API Spec 6A and Spec 6D valves when they are exposed to specifically defined fire conditions.

Butterfly valves are categorized according to their structure. Nowadays, there are more midline/center line butterfly valves and eccentric butterfly valves on the market. The standard length of the American standard butterfly valve used in the center line butterfly valve is the API 609 Class A butterfly valve. The eccentric butterfly valve is mainly a three-offset butterfly valve. The structure length standard adopted is the Class B butterfly valve regulated by API 609.

Two butterfly valve categories:

Category A Butterfly Valves:

Manufacturer’s rated cold working pressure (CWP) butterfly valves, usually with a concentric disc and seat configuration.  Sizes covered are NPS 2 to NPS 48 for valves having ASME Class 125 or Class 150 flange bolting patterns.

Category B Butterfly Valves:

Pressure-temperature rated butterfly valves that have an offset seat and either an eccentric or a concentric disc configuration.  These valves may have a seat rating less than the body rating.  Sizes covered are NPS 3 to NPS 24 for Classes 150, 300, and 600.

The Class B butterfly valve of the API 609 standard specifies the structure length of the American standard butterfly valve, flange butterfly valve, and lug butterfly valve. In comparison with the national standard GB butterfly valve, the flange butterfly valve, and the national standard butterfly valve structure length is the same, but there is a gap between the clip butterfly valve, especially the 6 inch, 8 inch difference between the two specifications/standard is largest. This is also a way to judge a manufacturer if they are professional in producing American standard butterfly valves.

In the API 609 Category B, the 6-inch to 150LB butterfly valve is specified, the structure length is only 57mm, and many manufacturers, or 70mm, is the same with the national standard valve body, it can be seen that many American standard butterfly valve manufacturers directly to use the national standard valve mold. The valve body was modified to the American standard connection size.

Differences between API 609 Category A and Category B Butterfly Valves

Category A Butterfly Valves
