Butterfly Valve Symbol – Top Butterfly Valve Suppliers and Manufacturers

In this article, you will learn about different valve symbols used in P&ID. Many valves are used in process piping, and each has a different symbol. This makes the valve one of the tricky parts of reading P&ID. But with practice, you can easily remember these symbols and read P&ID effectively.

What is a Piping And Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID)?

Before the completion of a well, a Facilities Engineer creates a diagram of all the piping and instrumentation designated for use in the production of the well. This is called a “Piping and Instrumentation Diagram” and is usually shortened to “P&ID.”

Upon the completion and approval of the P&ID, it then moves to a Purchasing Department. This department is responsible for getting this information to various equipment vendors, requesting quotes, and purchasing equipment for the well.

Butterfly Valve Symbols

The following symbols are used as butterfly valve symbols in isometric and P&ID.

The butterfly valve symbol is the only symbol where a full triangle is not used. If you refer to the first symbol, it is similar to a globe valve, but a triangle is not full. The alternative symbol is clearer in this case. For isometric symbols, you can see no socket end butterfly valve.

The Butterfly disc in the center rotates either parallel or perpendicular to the flow, allowing a quick shut-off. When the valve is fully closed, the disc is turned perpendicular to block off the passageway completely. When the valve of a Butterfly Valve is fully open, it is rotated a quarter turn and is parallel with the flow. The disc is called the Butterfly, mounted on a rod. The movement of the rod with the disc will depend on whether the valve is open or closed. Click here to see a range of our Valves, including Butterfly Valves.

Butterfly Valve Uses

The use of Butterfly valves is broad and wide. Some typical applications of butterfly valves are in the water supply, wastewater treatment, slurry services, fire protection, air and gas supply, vacuum services, lubrication system, chemical and oil industries, fuel handling systems, power generation, compressed air, and gas services, steam services, food processing, pharmaceutical, marine systems, and sanitary valve application. Butterfly Valves are suitable for use in

  • Constant Load Applications
  • Space-Restrictive Applications
  • Throttling Valves
