Wafer Butterfly Valve

What is API 609 A Butterfly Valve?

API 609 is the American design standard for butterfly valves divided into Categories A and B.

Category A valves are “concentric” type. Also known as rubber-lined butterfly valves. These are popular in low-pressure systems (Class 150 or less), relatively lower cycle life, and rubber liners are also good for abrasive slurry services.

Category B valves are “offset” type, meaning the shaft is offset from the disc so that they can handle higher differential pressures. Most offset types cause the disc to rotate freely from the seat after a few degrees of rotation, which minimizes seat wear and increases valve cycle life. The offset type can have rubber, polymer (PTFE or other), metal &graphite, or even metal seats. Lots of variety makes these suitable for various temperatures and pressures.

What is API 6D Standard?

API Standard 6D, from the American Petroleum Institute, provides specifications for pipeline valves.

API 6D covers the design, manufacture, testing, and documentation for pipeline ball, check, gate, and plug valves for pressure ratings up to ASME class 2500.

The standard specifies configurations for the following types of valves:

• Gate valves
• Lubricated and non-lubricated plug valves
• Ball valves
• Check valves
• Full-opening valves
• Reduced-opening valves
• The valve ends may be flanged or welding. If fluid can become trapped in the body cavity, then valves for both gas and liquid service must have a pressure relief. Actuators may be electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic.

What is API 6D Ball Valve?

API 6D ball valves are designed and manufactured to provide maximum service life and dependability. All ball valves are full port or reduced port and meet the design requirements of API 6D. API 6D ball valves are available in a complete range of body/bonnet materials and trims. API 6D ball valves are available for the pressure ratings only: Class 150, Class 300, Class 400, Class 600, Class 900, Class 1500, and Class 2500.

How does API 6D Ball Valve work?

API 6D ball valve works by using a ball with a bore at its center. The fluid flowing through the API 6D ball valves flows through the ball bore. To open the API 6D ball valve, the ball is rotated by rotating the handwheel or by using an actuator for actuated valves. The ball is connected to the handwheel or actuator via the stem. The stem transmits the torque needed to open/close the valve to the ball. When the ball is rotated the ball bore becomes in line with the pipeline transporting the fluid. This causes fluid to flow through the valve. To close the API 6D ball valve, the handwheel is rotated in the opposite direction to the direction of opening the valve. This makes the ball bore become perpendicular to the pipeline. In this case, the ball blocks the fluid such that the fluid cannot flow again. API 6D ball valve is connected to the pipeline using bolts and nuts connection or by welding. The bolts and nuts connection helps to make the API 6D ball valve easy to disassemble for cleaning and repairs while the valve is in the field. The welding connection makes the valve hard to open for repairs and cleaning. However, the welded connection makes the API 6D ball valve free from fluid leakage.

What is API 609 Standard?

API 609 standard covers design, materials, face-to-face dimensions, pressure-temperature ratings, and examination, inspection, and test requirements for gray iron, ductile iron, bronze, steel, nickel-based alloy, or special alloy butterfly valves.

The following two categories of butterfly valves are included:

Category A—Manufacturer’s rated cold working pressure (CWP) butterfly valves, usually with a concentric disc and seat configuration. Sizes covered are NPS 2 to NPS 60 for valves having ASME Class 125 or Class 150 flange bolting patterns.

Category B—ASME class and pressure-temperature-rated butterfly valves that have an offset seat and either an eccentric or a concentric disc configuration. Sizes covered are listed below:
for lug and wafer, Class 150 and 300: NPS 2 to NPS 60;
for lug and wafer, Class 600: NPS 3 to NPS 60;
for double-flanged short and long pattern, Class 150, 300, and 600: NPS 3 to NPS 60;
for butt-welding ends, Class 150, 300 and 600: NPS 3 to 60;

Know about Butterfly Valve

Butterfly valves can convey and control media such as water, condensate, circulating water, sewage, seawater, air, gas, liquid natural gas, dry powder, slurry, pulp, and mixtures with suspended matter.

When is a Butterfly Valve Used?

There are many kinds of butterfly valves, there are fast cut-off and continuous adjustments. Mainly used for liquid, gas low-pressure large diameter pipeline. Suitable for pressure loss requirements are not high, the need for flow regulation, opening and closing requirements for fast occasions. Usually, the temperature is below 300℃, the pressure is below 40kg, the medium is generally used for water and gas, the medium requirements are not high, granular media can also be used.

Several working conditions of the applicable butterfly valve

1. Usually, in throttling, regulating control, and slurry media, short structure length and fast opening and closing speed (1/4 turn) are required. Low-pressure cut-off (small differential pressure), the butterfly valve is recommended.

2. In special working conditions throttling adjustment, or require strict sealing, or serious wear, low temperature (deep cold), and other working conditions when using butterfly valve, need to use special design metal seal with regulating device three eccentric or double eccentric special butterfly valve.

3. Butterfly valve can be used in double-position adjustment, indented channel, low noise, cavitation and cavitation, small leakage to the atmosphere, and abrasive media.

4. Soft seal eccentric butterfly valve is suitable for bi-directional opening and closing and adjustment of ventilation and dust removal pipeline, widely used in metallurgy, light industry, electric power, a petrochemical system of gas pipeline, and waterway, etc.

5. Midline butterfly valve is suitable for fresh water, sewage, seawater, saltwater, steam, natural gas, food, medicine, oil, and various acids and alkalis and other pipelines that require complete sealing, zero leakage in gas test, high life expectancy, and working temperature from -10℃ to 150℃.　　

5. Metal-to-metal face seal triple eccentric butterfly valve can be widely used in petroleum, petrochemical, chemical, metallurgy, electric power, and other fields, in addition to being used as a large pressure swing adsorption (PSA) gas separation device program control valve, and is a good alternative to gate valves and globe valves.

6. Metal-to-metal line seal double eccentric butterfly valve is suitable for urban heating, gas supply, water supply, and other gas, oil, acid, and alkali pipelines, as a regulating and throttling device.

7. Usually, in throttling, regulating control, and slurry media, the structure is required to be short in length and fast in opening and closing speed (1/4 turn). Low-pressure cut-off (small differential pressure), butterfly valve is recommended.

Tip: As a sealed butterfly valve, it was only after the emergence of synthetic rubber that it brought rapid development, so it is a new type of cut-off valve. In our country until the 1980s, butterfly valves mainly functioned as low-pressure valves with synthetic rubber seats, and by the 1990s, due to increased exchanges with foreign countries, hard seal (metal seal) butterfly valves were able to develop rapidly. Butterfly valves are categorized according to their structure. Nowadays, there are more midline/center line butterfly valves and eccentric butterfly valves on the market. The standard length of the American standard butterfly valve used in the center line butterfly valve is the API 609 Class A butterfly valve. The eccentric butterfly valve is mainly a three-offset butterfly valve. The structure length standard adopted is the Class B butterfly valve regulated by API 609.

Two butterfly valve categories:

Category A Butterfly Valves:

Manufacturer’s rated cold working pressure (CWP) butterfly valves, usually with a concentric disc and seat configuration.  Sizes covered are NPS 2 to NPS 48 for valves having ASME Class 125 or Class 150 flange bolting patterns.

Category B Butterfly Valves:

Pressure-temperature rated butterfly valves that have an offset seat and either an eccentric or a concentric disc configuration.  These valves may have a seat rating less than the body rating.  Sizes covered are NPS 3 to NPS 24 for Classes 150, 300, and 600.

The Class B butterfly valve of the API 609 standard specifies the structure length of the American standard butterfly valve, flange butterfly valve, and lug butterfly valve. In comparison with the national standard GB butterfly valve, the flange butterfly valve, and the national standard butterfly valve structure length is the same, but there is a gap between the clip butterfly valve, especially the 6 inch, 8 inch difference between the two specifications/standard is largest. This is also a way to judge a manufacturer if they are professional in producing American standard butterfly valves.

In the API 609 Category B, the 6-inch to 150LB butterfly valve is specified, the structure length is only 57mm, and many manufacturers, or 70mm, is the same with the national standard valve body, it can be seen that many American standard butterfly valve manufacturers directly to use the national standard valve mold. The valve body was modified to the American standard connection size.
