Working Principle of Check Valves

As already stated, a check valve operates on the principle of differential pressure. For a check valve to open, it must attain a minimum upstream pressure known as cracking pressure. Depending on the check valve design and size, the cracking pressure changes. When the upstream pressure reaches the cracking pressure, the valve opens, allowing the fluid to enter. Back pressure is generated when the upstream pressure falls below the cracking pressure and the flow attempts to move from the outlet to the inlet. At this point, the check valve closes, and the flow halts. The closing mechanism of a check valve varies depending on the design and type of the valve. Spring or Gravity pressure normally assist the closing process.

As the check valve works only in one direction, manufacturers provide an arrow on the valve body indicating the flow direction.

Types of Check Valves

Swing Check Valves

A basic swing Check valve consists of a valve body, a bonnet, and a disk connected to a hinge. The disk swings away from the valve seat to allow flow in the forward direction and returns to the valve seat when the upstream flow is stopped to prevent backflow.

The disc in a swing type Check valve is unguided as it fully opens or closes. Many disk and seat designs are available to meet the requirements of different applications. The valve allows full, unobstructed flow and automatically closes as pressure decreases. These valves are fully closed when the flow reaches zero to prevent backflow. Turbulence and pressure drop in the valve is very low.

Wafer Check Valves

Wafer Type Check Valve has short face-to-face dimensions and low weight allowing a simple space-saving installation between the companion flanges.

The valves are suitable for mounting between weld neck or slip-on type companion flanges of different standards.

They are specially developed for applications where a low-pressure loss is essential. Opening and closing of the valve will take place at an extremely low-pressure difference over the valve disc.

The eccentric disc shaft combination with the disc seat guarantees a positive shut-off returning media. Wafer check valves are becoming the preferred type of check valve for most applications due to their compact design and relatively low cost.

Lift Check Valve / Piston Check Valve

The seat design of a lift-Check valve is similar to a Globe valve. The disc is usually in the form of a piston or a ball.

Lift Check valves are particularly suitable for high-pressure service with high flow velocity. In lift Check valves, the disc is precisely guided and fits perfectly into the dashpot. Lift Check valves are suitable for installation in horizontal or vertical pipelines with upward flow.

Flow to lift Check valves must always enter below the seat. As the flow enters, the piston or ball is raised within guides from the seat by the pressure of the upward flow. When the flow stops or reverses, the piston or ball is forced onto the valve’s seat by both the backflow and gravity.

Ball Check Valves

Ball check valves are simple and commonly used on small pumps and low-head systems. Ball check valves involve a spring-loaded or free-floating spherical ball clapper to shut at pressures below the cracking pressure. The sealing seat is conically tapered to guide the ball into the seat and create a positive seal. However, these valves can easily wear due to prolonged use and require frequent maintenance.

Tilting Disc Check Valves

The tilting disc check valve is similar in appearance to an eccentric butterfly valve. The valve body is double‐flanged and of a short length. The disc is placed via a shaft positioned eccentrically from the body centreline in both the horizontal and vertical axes.

The double eccentricity of the shaft results in the lower section of the disc occupying a greater area in the flow path. Consequently, the disc begins to open at very low flow rates. Therefore, the tilting disc check valve is commonly used in pumping systems with low flow rates and for pulsating flows.

During flow reversal, the disc closes due to gravity. The upper part of the disc above the shaft centreline pushes against the flow, thus acting as a hydraulic brake that cushions the disc as it returns to the closed position. Tilting disc valves can be supplied with optional levers and weights to adjust the closing characteristics of the valve. As such, the tilting disc check valves are well suited to reduce the risk of water hammers.

Butterfly Check Valve

A butterfly check valve is a dual plate check valve, folding disc check valve, double-disc, or split disc check valve. As the name suggests, two halves of the disk move towards the centerline with the forward flow, and with reverse flow, two halves open and rest on the seat to close the flow.

These types of check valves are good for low-pressure liquid systems as well as gas piping systems. Its lightweight and compact construction makes it a preferable choice when space and convenience are important. Besides, it is 80 to 90% lighter than the conventional full-body check valve, and the installation and maintenance cost is lower than other types.

Diaphragm Check Valve

Diaphragm check valves consist of rubber flexing diaphragms or self-centering discs for preventing backflow. When the inlet pressure is increased, the diaphragm flexes open, and flow starts. There are two types of diaphragm check valves;

• Free-floating Normally Open Valve
• Fixed Flexing Normally closed Valve

In the case of normally open diaphragm valves, no cracking pressure is required as the self-centering elastomeric diaphragm is free-floating. However, they need back pressure to close the valve. On the other hand, normally closed valves need a certain inlet pressure to overcome the elasticity of the fixed diaphragm.

Stop Check Valve

A stop check valve is two valves built into one body. It can act as a globe valve for isolation or regulation purposes. Again, It can act as a check valve to prevent backflow. Contrary to other check valves, the Stop check valve has an additional external control mechanism in the perpendicular or angular direction. Stop Check valves are popular in steam services like power plants, boiler circulation, steam generators, turbine cooling, and safety systems.

This post will focus on explaining different types of industrial valves, their mechanism, their application in the oil and gas industry as well as API and ASME standards for oil and gas valves.

What are Valves in Oil and Gas?

A valve is a device used to regulate the flow of oil and gas. Opening or closing an aperture controls the amount of liquids and gases allowed through pipes. The valve controls the flow of fluids by stopping and starting, adjusting the amounts, controlling the direction, regulating pressure, or relieving pressure.

Types of Valves Used in the Oil and Gas Industry

1. Ball Valves

Ball valves are available in various materials and sizes. They are used for the broadest spectrum of isolation applications and are available in full flow and full through conduits.

Advantages: low-pressure drop, quick-acting, straight through flow in either direction, easily actuated, bubble tight shut off & operating torque.
Disadvantages: long “relative” face to face dimension and temperature limitations on seating material.

2. Gate Valves

The function of the gate valve is to start or stop a flow when a straight-line flow of fluid and minimum flow restriction is needed.

During use, gate valves are kept either fully open or fully closed. The disc of the gate is completely removed when turned open, allowing contents to pass through.

Advantages: a straight-through flow of fluid in either direction, low-pressure drop.
Disadvantages: slow-acting, takes a lot of space. Not drip tight shut off.

3. Globe Valves

If you want to stop the flow of air, you can close the globe valve using a plug-like piston. When the actuator is turned, the linear valve opens and closes. It is possible to open this valve to a variety of levels due to the threading on the stem. The popularity of this sort of valve in the petrochemical industry can be traced back to this very fact. Depending on how much throttling is required, the opening size can be reduced.

4. Check Valves

Gas refineries find check valves extremely helpful as the device opens under pressure and does not allow backflow of fluid or material. Because of the restricted backflow, cross-contamination of the product is prevented. That is, different materials can use the same pipeline. There is no need for an actuator as required in other valve types. However, it does need precise installation to ensure the response to fluid pressure occurs as required.

5. Plug Valves

A plug valve is also a linear valve but it has a wider piston than a globe valve. While it may not be ideal for throttling, it can hold its own in high pressure or a high-temperature pipeline. The wider surface area of the plug provides enough room for the pressure to be distributed and dissipated along the plug while maintaining fluid flow control.

6. Butterfly Valves

A butterfly valve makes up for a lot of what a gate valve lacks in terms of performance. Open channels allow media to flow freely, even if they contain solid particles. Since the stem at the base of a butterfly valve holds its disc in place, it can be used in high-pressure pipelines. Its low-torque operation is also a result of these design attributes.

7. Control Valves

Control valves are valves that provide process control over flow rate, pressure, and temperature in the oil and gas industry. They work by varying the size of the flow passage way as directed by either a hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical signal sent from a controller. The automatic operation of these valves gives them the ability to be operated remotely, rather than having an operator constantly monitoring and adjusting.

The following valve installation for you to explain the matters needing attention.

• 1. When installing the valve, clean the inner chamber and sealing surface, tighten the connecting bolts evenly, and check whether the packing is compressed;|
• 2. The international valve is installed in the closed position;
• 3. The valve should be installed in the allowed position, but should pay attention to the convenience of maintenance and operation;
• 4. The installation of the globe valve should make the flow direction of the medium consistent with the arrow marked on the valve body. For the valve that is not often opened and closed and needs to strictly ensure no leakage in the closed state, it can be reverse installed to make it closed with the help of the medium pressure;
• 5. When tightening the compression screw, the valve should be in a slightly open state to avoid crushing the top sealing surface of the valve;
• 6. Before positioning the cryogenic valve should try its best to do the opening and closing test in the cold state;
• 7. Large air separation tower in the naked cold, in the cold state of the connection valve flange pre-tightening, to prevent leakage at room temperature and low temperature leakage phenomenon;
• 8. After all the valves are in place, they should be opened and closed again. It is qualified that there is no jamming;
• 9. When the new valve is used, the packing should not be pressed too tightly, so as not to leak too much, lest the valve stem is pressed too much, accelerate wear and tear, and open and close laboriously;
• 10. Before installing the valve, clean the inside of the pipe to remove iron and other impurities and prevent the valve sealing seat from containing foreign matter;
• 11. The high-temperature valve is installed at room temperature. After use, the temperature will rise, the bolt will be heated and the clearance will be enlarged, so it must be tightened again. Attention should be paid to this problem, otherwise, it is easy to leak;
• 12. Install the valve to confirm that the medium flow, installation and handwheel position is in accordance with the regulations.

Types of Check Valves

There are many styles of check valves, they use different mechanisms to prevent backflow, including discs, balls, pistons, and other forms. The flow can be straight, angled, or lifted. Each type of check valve has its advantages. Swing check valves allow the use of pigs through the pipeline to clean or inspect the pipeline. Others perform best in vertical flow. Some can be repaired online. Some contain solid or fibrous materials that can withstand flow.

Accessories can fine-tune the performance of the valve. Various combinations of levers and counterweights, springs, air cushions or shock absorbers can help control the closing speed of the valve to match the application and prevent valve slam and water hammer problems. Other accessories, such as position indicators, provide operational information. In many applications, it is best to include a backwash
device to remove any debris that has accumulated on the bottom of the valve.

Swing Check Valve

Axial Flow Check Valve

The main purpose of an axial flow check valve is to allow flow in one direction while prohibiting or stopping flow in the opposite direction. It is normally stationary in the closed position. The performance of axial check valves in terms of low pressure loss, stable operation, and dynamic behavior play a vital role in critical check applications such as the protection of rotating equipment and systems.

Lift Check Valve

This type of valve is typical in applications requiring high-pressure service. Effective with a high-velocity flow, lift check valves can be installed either horizontally or vertically (in pipelines with an upward flow). Types of lift check valves include piston type and ball type. This type of valve can prove more leak resistant.

Valves suitable for the job

Since the flow of fluid opens the check valve, it is important to understand the fluid and its characteristics. Is the fluid a liquid, a gas, or a multiphase – solid in a liquid stream or a liquid in a gas stream? What is the normal volume flow rate? Is the flow horizontal or vertical? Up or down? What will be the temperature and pressure of the flow? What are the physical properties of the fluid, such as density and viscosity? What are the chemical properties of the fluid, such as its pH and vapor pressure? Is it corrosive? Is it abrasive?

These flow characteristics determine which style of the check valve can complete the work, as well as any special material requirements for the check valve and valve trim.

What if the check valve is the wrong size?

Too large a check valve results in a low flow rate, which makes it impossible to keep the valve open all the time. This can cause instability and the valve may vibrate or vibrate. Conversely, frequent valve/spool replacement, and other system shutdowns due to repair or replacement of check valves, will lead to premature mechanical wear of the valve and possible additional maintenance costs.

A check valve that is too small will cause the flow through the valve to be too high, resulting in unnecessary high-pressure losses in the system. It can also create excessive turbulence in the flow, which can cause valve instability and increase mechanical wear, leading to higher maintenance costs. Similarly, a higher flow rate through a valve that is too small may increase corrosion and wear inside the valve.

Check valves play an important role in protecting other components in the flow system. In order to complete its work, each check valve must be of the type suitable for the application and needs to be sized correctly to keep it fully open at normal operating flow. What is an Axial Check Valve?

The main purpose of an axial flow check valve is to allow flow in one direction while prohibiting or stopping flow in the opposite direction. It is normally stationary in the closed position. The performance of axial check valves in terms of low pressure loss, stable operation, and dynamic behavior play a vital role in critical check applications such as the protection of rotating equipment and systems.

Why are Axial Check Valves used and play a vital role?

When the flow in a pipeline is reversed, this can cause a hydraulic shock wave to pass through (also known as a water hammer). This can cause serious damage to equipment in the pipeline if nothing is done to prevent it. Introducing the correct check valve, in the fully closed position in the event of a reversal of flow, can prevent this from happening and causing serious problems in the field.

A valve that prevents water hammer and rapid closure without a banging sound is known as an axial flow check valve.

How are Axial Flow Check Valves used?

The axial check valve is specifically designed for fast backflow systems, where backflow is a constant problem. It is classified as a non-slam check valve as there is no slamming when the valve closes, meaning that no excess pressure spikes are generated. Most axial flow check valves are spring loaded and have a low mass disc, which facilitates a rapid dynamic response to a reduction in flow. As there is a single disc and spring, the forces are balanced when the disc is open, resulting in a uniform flow.

Working principle of Axial Flow Check Valves

When the pressure difference between the upstream and downstream of the valve exceeds the rupture pressure of the spring, the disc will move and allow flow. The flow area of the valve steadily decreases to the seat diameter; this is the venturi design.

As a result of the venturi design, the reduced flow area increases the dynamic pressure and reduces the static pressure, allowing the valve to open fully and quickly. The spring is chosen to allow the disc to open fully and stabilize on its backstop under normal flow conditions.

When the flow rate is significantly reduced, the spring responds to the reduced flow rate in advance.

Advantages of Axial Check Valves

1. Axial flow

The streamlined flow path through the full port expanded body prevents turbulence, erosion, and vibration, which eliminates the process downtime and maintenance cost.

2. Low pressure loss

The full port passage and high-pressure recovery of the venturi-shaped body lead to lower pressure loss. This saves the cost of pumps.

3. Tight shut-off

Tight shut-off is achieved by a metal-to-metal seal between the disc and the valve seat. This seal is unaffected by material erosion and deformation (e.g. soft seal).

4. Easy opening and stable operation

The low static pressure in the throat area of the venturi shape creates a pressure differential across the disc, resulting in the easy opening. Axial check valves respond smoothly to changes in flow and remain stable when they should.

5. Non-slamming operation

The spring-assisted design ensures ultra-fast closing, with virtually no backflow or pressure surges in critical applications such as multi-pump systems or LNG trains.

6. Maintenance-free

The internal construction is based on the application of sound basic mechanical engineering principles. As a result, ZECO axial check valves do not require any maintenance.

Difference between Swing Check Valves and Axial Check Valves

Swing check valve

A fairly basic type of valve, swing check valves are butterfly shaped, meaning that the disc – the part that stops the flow of fluid – opens and closes on a hinge or trunnion. Although these valves are ideal in some applications, swing check valves are being phased out due to commonly recurring problems such as turbulence and water hammer.

Axial check valve

The axial flow check valve is an updated design of the swing check valve. The disc in the valve is held in place by a spring. This centers the movement of the disc, allowing smoother fluid flow and reactive opening and closing without the sudden movements that cause the water hammer.
