Steam Globe Valve

What is a Steam Globe Valve?

A steam globe valve is a type of globe valve that is meant for use in controlling the flow of steam. Steam globe valves are used for throttling, opening, and closing fluid flow. These valves are also used to control the flow of steam pressure. Steam globe valves are used in different applications such as foods and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and steam power plants among others. When used in applications such as sanitary (for example in foods and pharmaceuticals), these valves are used to release the steam so that it comes into contact with the end product and it has to be very clean. Steam globe valve manufacturers design the body of these valves with strong metallic material. This help to give the body high strength to withstand high pressure and high temperatures such as 700 C. Such materials used by steam globe valve manufacturers to make the body include cast iron, ductile cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel. Steam globe valves are either manual or automatic valves. The manual steam globe valves are operated by the valve operator using the handwheel while the automatic ones are operated using valve actuators. The valve actuators used in steam globe valves are electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic actuators.

Steam Globe Valve Operations

Typically, steam globe valves are used for regulating flow in pipelines. Instead of having the “all or nothing” approach of a gate valve, globe valves regulate by the position of a movable disk (or plug) in relation to the stationary ring seat.

The most typical operation for a globe valve is throttling flow control. They are designed to stop, start and regulate the flow of a particular media in linear motion. However, they can also cater to changes in direction, which result in greater resistance to flow and higher pressure drops.

While they are an excellent choice for on-off services, globe valves are much better suited to frequent cycling and control of media between the open and closed positions. Globe valves are hugely versatile, which means they can cover a wide range of flow ranges in various applications. One common globe valve application is steam control.

The design of the compact but very strong, because of the service, high solid CoCr alloy wedge (optional) ensures low friction and long service life, packing ring preloading 4000 psi with high integrity seal welded bonnet valves, valve cover internal thread, torque to engineering torque value, the valve bonnet joint made of welding strength, can double to prevent leakage. (body/bonnet threads and strength welds), fully guided wedge reduces wear on seat surfaces, optional dual packing, leak-free connection, live load, and packing blowout for easy removal of old packing.

Advantages of Steam Globe Valves

  • Seat faces lapped for a smooth finish and superior sealing;
  • Swivel disc for optimal seating and longer seat life;
  • Stems of hand wheel operated valves are rotating/rising design;
  • Each valve is shell, seat, and backseat pressure tested per industry standard API 598;
  • The gland is two piece gland/gland flange design for optimal alignment and uniform packing compression;
  • Alternate valve materials such as chrome and stainless steel alloys -Alternate trim materials -Bypass, drain, and other auxiliary connections -Gear, motor, and cylinder actuators available.

Globe Valves for Steam Applications

When considering a control valve for steam applications, temperature, and pressure considerations will play an important role in your decision-making. The higher both of these are within your chosen application, the more this affects the steam and the valve in place.

Whereas most other valves would see the steam break through and tear it apart, globe valves offer greater resilience and could theoretically last for years in some applications.

The type of valve most commonly compared alongside globe valves is gate valves. Both have the same purpose, to control the flow of media. However, gate valves should always be left either open or closed. If gate valves were to be left partially open as globe valves are, they would eventually be rendered useless.

In addition, gate valves would not be well suited for throttling, as this would result in excessive wear due to wire drawing and seat erosion. Similarly, ball valves would also succumb to damage if they were left partially open in steam applications because they lack fine control.

The additional advantage offered by globe valves in steam applications is their ability to reduce flow with accuracy. They are widely used to obtain a flow that can be calculated with exceptional precision. Something that is highly desirable in steam control applications.
