The Histroy of the Valve

Valves are devices used to control fluid flow, pressure and flow direction. The fluid to be controlled may be liquid, gas, gas-liquid mixture or solid-liquid mixture. The valve is usually composed of valve body, bonnet, valve seat, opening and closing parts, driving mechanism, seals and fasteners. The control function of the valve is realized by driving the mechanism or fluid to drive the opening and closing member to move up and down, slide, swing or rotate to change the size of the flow channel area.

The valve has a wide range of uses, and it is closely related to people’s daily lives. For example, faucets for water pipes and pressure reducing valves for liquefied petroleum gas stoves are all valves. Valves are also indispensable components in various mechanical equipment such as internal combustion engines, steam engines, compressors, pumps, pneumatic transmissions, hydraulic transmission vehicles, ships and aircraft.

Two thousand years ago BC, the Chinese used bamboo pipes and wooden plug valves on water pipelines, and later used sluices on irrigation channels, plate check valves on smelting wind boxes, and bamboo on well salt mining. Pipeline and plate check valves extract brine.

With the development of smelting technology and hydraulic machinery, copper and lead plug valves have appeared in Europe. With the use of the boiler, the lever hammer safety valve appeared again in 1681. Before the emergence of the Watt steam engine in 1769, plug valves and check valves have been the most important valves. The invention of the steam engine brought the valve into the field of machinery industry. In addition to plug valves, safety valves, and check valves, Watt steam engines also use butterfly valves to regulate the flow. With the increase of steam flow and pressure, the use of plug valves to control the steam inlet and exhaust of the steam engine has been unable to meet the needs, so the slide valve
appeared. Around 1840, globe valves with threaded stems and wedge gate valves with trapezoidal threaded stems appeared one after another. This was a major breakthrough in valve development. The emergence of these two types of valves not only met the requirements of various industries for increasing pressure and temperature at the time, but also initially met the requirements for flow regulation. Since then, with the development of the power industry, petroleum industry, chemical industry and shipbuilding industry, various high and medium pressure valves have developed rapidly.

After the Second World War, due to the development of polymer materials, lubricating materials, stainless steel and cobalt-based cemented carbide, ancient plug valves and butterfly valves have been used in new applications, and ball valves and diaphragm valves have been rapidly
developed. The varieties of globe valves, gate valves and other valves have increased, and their quality has improved. The valve manufacturing
industry has gradually become an important sector of the machinery industry. Valves can be divided into six types according to the function of use: cut-off valve, regulating valve, check valve, diverter valve, safety valve and multi-purpose valve.

What is a Bellow Seal Gate Valve?

A Bellow Sealed Gate Valve is a industrial process valve designed to eliminate valve leakage and are also known as ‘Zero Leak Valve’ or ‘Emission Free Valve.’

In particular chemical processes the fluids in the pipes are often toxic, radioactive and hazardous. Bellow sealed gate valves are used to prevent leakage of any toxic chemical to the atmosphere.

What is a Bellows Valve?

A Bellows Valve is a specially designed valve suitable for use in industries dealing with a hazardous medium where even minute leakages can be extremely critical. With the exponential growth of new industries such as the chemical and nuclear industry, there is a growing abundance of flammable, hazardous, extremely poisonous, and toxic media flowing through the pipelines. This creates a high risk of leakage, explosion, and health hazards. So, the valves used in such pipes and systems have specific stringent leakage and sealing requirements.

The need for a completely different approach required for the desired sealing & redundancy has led to the development of Bellow seal globe Valve.

How does Bellow Seal Globe Valve work?

A Bellow Seal Globe Valve is a compact structure that is a kind of control valve which uses bellows for sealing the valve stem components. The bellows valve has a bellow inside, and the lower end of the stainless-steel bellows is welded to the stem to prevent the system fluid from eroding the stem. The other end is positioned between the body of the valve and the cover of the valve to create a permanent seal. This double seal configuration eliminates leakage i.e., even if the bellows collapses, the stem packaging will prevent further leakage. The bellows are welded to the valve stem to ensure stable operating efficiency and prevent the vibration of the valve stem induced by the movement of the valve insert.

What is a DIN Globe Valve?

Typically, DIN globe valves are made of cast steel with external threads and yoke (OS&Y) and rising stem. Long-life bellows seal designs are available upon request, significantly improving stem sealing performance and ensuring long service life.

It is a cast full bore valve, with female thread, different types of plugs, especially suitable for adjustment, manufactured according to DIN standard.

Specifications of DIN Globe Valves

Size: from 2″ to 16″
Pressure: PN16 – PN160
Material: we can offer valves in 1.0619, LCB, WC6, WC9, C12, C5, CF8, CF3, CF3M, and CF8M

Actuation: can operate with lever, gear box, pneumatic or electric actuator
Medium: The valve is suitable for several media including water, steam, oil, gas, petrol products, nitric acid, acetic acid, etc.
Working temperature: from -46ºC or -50ºC (stainless steel constructions) and -29ºC or -46ºC (carbon steel constructions) up to 600℃

DIN globe valves are designed and manufactured to DIN 3356, BS 1873, EN 13709, and EN 12516.

Face-to-face dimensions conform to DIN 3202, EN 558-1.

FF, RF, or RTJ flanged ends are furnished in accordance with EN 1092-1, DIN 2543~DIN 2550.

Test & Inspection: DIN3230, API 598 or MSS SP-117

Typically, DIN globe valves are made from cast steel with an outside screw & yoke(OS&Y) and rising stem. Long-cycle life below seal design is available upon request which prominently improves the sealing performance at the stem as well as ensures a long service life.

Design of Bellows Seal Globe Valves

OS&Y Structure
- The structure features a nonrotational stem and non-lifting handle so that the bellows are not twisted.
Gland Packing
- This blocks external leakage in the event of bellows breakage. MV, forged steel, cast steel, SUS 20K: Expanded graphite packing SUS 10K, 150lb: Reinforced PTFE + PTFE packing
Bolted Bonnet Structure
- The bolted bonnet structure provides simple maintenance and management.
- The bolt-tightened structure ensures reliable fastening.
Upper gasket
- An expanded graphite seat is used for the upper gasket.
- This blocks external leakage in the event of bellows breakage.
Lower gasket
- External leakage is blocked with the use of a high-quality gasket. MV, forged steel, cast steel, SUS 20K: Expanded graphic gasket SUS 10K, 150lb: Reinforced PTFE gasket
Bellows
- Hydroulic multi-layer bellows. SUS316L, which features excellent pressure and corrosion resistance, is used.
Seat surfaces
- Both seat surfaces with excellent jamming and abrasion resistance. (Optional for SUS valves)
Valve body
- Supports ductile cast iron (FCD-S), stainless steel (SCS13A), (SCS14A), cast steel (ASTM A216-WCB), and forged steel (ASTM A105).

Advantages of Bellows Seal Globe Valves

The design of the bellows seal globe valve is better than that of the ordinary globe valve. So, what are the advantages of bellows seal globe valves compared with ordinary ones?

The bellows seal globe valve has no leakage and is applied to a high-risk medium.
The common globe valve is sealed with packing, and a slide will occur between the valve stem and packing so that the valve is easy to leak at low temperatures.
Bellows seal globe valves use closed bellows which can be stretched and compressed to replace packing seals, effectively preventing leakage caused by packing losses. Generally, these valves are used for transmission of the medium with strong permeability. For instance, there is usually no leakage occurring to bellows seal globe valves for the hydrogen system, as long as bellows are not damaged. However, the common globe valve is sealed with packing, which is easy to cause leakage.
The bellows seal globe valve can cut off the flow of media and the opening or closing stroke of the valve stem is relatively short. Because the change of the seat opening is proportional to the stroke of the disc, the valve is an ideal choice for flow regulation. Therefore, this type of valve is very suitable for regulating or cutting off the flow, and for throttling.
Double seals (bellows+packing). If bellows fail, valve stem packing will avoid leakage. And the sealing meets international standards.
No fluid loss and energy loss reduction.
Long service life, reducing maintenance frequency and operating costs.
The robust bellows seal ensures zero leakage of the valve stem and provides maintenance-free.
PTFE soft seal materials are used for the valve seat for gas media to improve the sealing of the valve.
The valve seat with high-temperature resistance (≤425℃) adopts the conical surface and hard sealing.

What is a Bellow Seal Valve?

Bellow seal valve is designed with bellow welded onto the bonnet and stem, so that when the stem travels drive the below expansion or decompression. Bellow sealed valves can achieve truly zero leakage; ideal for stringent leakage-free applications like toxic and flammable services. How does Bellow Seal Valves work?

These valves feature accordion-like bellows—i.e., the bellows cartridge component, welded to the valve stem and bonnet. During the valve stroke, the bellows compress or expand along with the sliding stem’s linear motion with little to no friction.

Types of Bellows

Formed bellows: Conval’s standard design, formed bellows begins as a flat sheet (thin wall foil) rolled into a tube and fusion-welded longitudinally forming a single layer. Thin metal layers are combined to form multi-ply bellows. Mechanical or hydrostatic force forms the bellows with wide-spaced rounded folds. Conval has supplied bellows with as many as 6 plies for higher pressure applications.
Welded bellows: Welded bellows are manufactured by welding washer-like plates of thin metal at both their inner and outer circumferences.

Gate valve with bellow seal acc. to ANSI is applicable to the cutting and connection of pipelines fluid. The medium that is used in various industries such as petroleum, chemical industry, pharmacy, Chemical fertilizer, electric power industry, etc under nominal pressure of CLASS150-900LBS and working temperature of -29~350℃

Bellows Seal Globe Valve

A Bellows Seal Globe Valve is a compact structure that is a kind of control valve which uses bellows for sealing the valve stem components. The bellows valve has a bellow inside, and the lower end of the stainless-steel bellows is welded to the stem to prevent the system fluid from eroding the stem.

Features of Bellows Seal Globe Valve

The most prominent advantage of any bellows valve is the Double seal design (bellows + packing). So, even if the bellows fail, the stem packing will prevent any kind of leakage to meet the international sealing standards.

Bellows Seal Valve vs Packed Valves

Packed valves require two seal boundaries: a 360° seal on the stem surface and a 360° seal on the stuffing box wall. The Conval bellows seal valve removes these two leak paths. Conval bellows seal valves are used when packed valves may not reliably contain light gases or hazardous system fluids. In all applications, the 6-ply Inconel welded bellows stem seal is more reliable than sliding stem seals.
