Types of Valves for Chemical Industry

The chemical industry can involve various processes. There is control established through the means of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatical, and sometimes through manual basis. The valves used should be able to handle the pressure, and prevent any leakage. Different valves are known for their different functions.

Butterfly Valves

For open/close actions that can take place easily; Butterfly valves are the ideal option. Their installation requires less effort, and they can work with various actuators. Moreover, their maintenance will not take a toll on your expenses, because that requirement is minimal.

Butterfly valves are also important because they can slow the flow of the substance. Another advantage is that they are light in weight. They are also very precise. However, if proper sealing is your main concern, then you might want to consider another valve because butterfly valves can have poor sealing functionality.

Ball Valves

Ball valves are used to control pressure and flow. One feature that makes them so useful is that they’re leak-proof. Thus, these valves are fantastic in the chemical industry when liquids are involved. In terms of structure, they have a group of rotating ported spheres, or balls with holes, that shift to block or permit flow.

They’re most common in systems that control flow from compressed air lines with direction towards high-pressure hydraulic systems. Their popularity, though, stems from more than just fantastic function. They’re cost-efficient, compact, easy to use, and require very little maintenance.

Gate Valves

Gate valves are primarily shut-off valves. That is, they are fantastic at preventing any and all flow of liquid. Throttling with a gate valve, while possible, isn’t recommended. This is due to potential damage to the disc and, over time, possibly permanent damage that renders the valve useless.

In terms of function, gate valves have a plate barrier that enters and retreats from a stream of liquid, operated via twisting a top handle. Alternatives include parallel plates and wedge-shaped plugs. The wedges offer additional variety, making gate valves a great choice for various uses.

These shine most in chemical plants that are most involved with liquids. Still, though, it’s also possible to use gate valves for gas and solids, to a degree. They’re also divided into two primary groups. These are rising-stems and non-rising stems. The former enhances visibility whereas the latter prevents damage from corrosive environmental conditions.

Globe Valves

Globe Valves can be ideal for manual operation. They can work for automatic operations as well. They can be used to regulate flow and pressures. Furthermore, they can also function as completely shut or open flow valves. These sphere-shaped valves have two divisions on the inside. They operate in a linear movement.

Check Valves

Check valves are two-port valves with two openings that allow fluid to flow through in one direction and prevent flow reversal. They’re used in a plethora of industries but are also quite present in the chemical industry. Interestingly enough, they lack a handle or stem. This is because they work automatically and don’t require manual handling.

They come in three forms. These are swing check valves, piston check valves, and lift check valves. The first is most compatible with fluids that move at slow speeds. The second, composed of a disc, piston, or ball, is built for smaller pipes with frequent and significant pressure drops. The third, and final form, is a stem operated version that’s made to resist high temperatures, pressure levels, and highly corrosive substances.

A constant between the different forms is how they react to cracking, reseal, and back pressure. The consistency is found in that they’re built to withstand high levels of the three forms of pressure. This is, to the minimum differential between the inlet and outlet of the valve, pressure present during the closing of the valve, and higher pressure at the outlet than the inlet.

Plug Valves

Plug valves are similar in design to ball valves. They’re classified as quarter-turn valves that control the flow of fluid through a pipe. It does so via a ported plug that swivels into the stream to allow or constrict the liquid. While primarily used for shutting off or permitting a material’s passing, they can also function, to a lesser degree, as a flow regulator.

It’s important to make a distinction between plug valves and lubricated plug valves. The latter, as its name suggests, involves lubrication between the plug and valve. This serves as something of a sealant, whereas unlubricated alternatives use a sleeve made of polymer for friction relief and sealing.

Actuated Valves

Actuated Valve requires a 90-degree turn to completely shut off or open. There can be a pneumatic actuated valve, electric actuated valve, and hydraulic actuated valve. Actuated valves have their own set of functions just like the other valves described above.

What is TISCO Steel?

TISCO Industrial co., limited (TISCO Industrial) has developed into a comprehensive enterprise integrating stainless steel material production, processing, sales, and agent under the care of colleagues and customers from all walks of life since its establishment. TISCO, an important enterprise in Vietnam, was established in 1958. TISCO possesses a coke-making plant, sinter plants, iron-making plants, steel-making plants, and rolling mill plants as well as corresponding utilities and auxiliary facilities, etc. Its annual output of iron and steel is about 200,000t and the common carbon steel casting billet is about 250,00t.

How A Coke Plant Works?

Coal is the main ingredient used to make coke. Iron is produced by inputting coal into a blast furnace. However, coal cannot be put directly into a blast furnace because of all the harmful by-products that come from that. So, there is an intermediate process that occurs. Coal is converted into coke first. Coke is used as fuel in a blast furnace. It plays an important role in the chemical processes that take place in a blast furnace.
Coal is heated to about 1250 degrees Celsius in the coke ovens. This process is referred to as ‘dry distillation’ because these coke ovens are oxygen free, so the coal does not actually burn. This process takes around 18 hours to convert 35 tons of coal into 25 tons of coke.

After heating up the coal into coke, the coke is then unloaded from the oven by a pusher machine. The pusher machine has a pusher arm that puts the coke into a car that takes the coke to a coke quenching tower. Here, the coke is quenched with water. The coke is then taken to a coke wharf, where the remaining water evaporates. A reclaimer then feeds the coke from the wharf to a conveyor belt, which transfers the coke to the crushing and screening station. The finished product is about two-thirds the weight of the original raw material.

During the distillation process, a large amount of gas and smoke is generated, which, after purification, creates coke oven gas, and other by-products such as ammonia, tar, sulfur, naphthalene, and benzol. The creation of coke and the purification of gas are performed completely automated.

Coke makers use a mix of coal to improve the quality of coke they create. A high-quality coal does not generate high pressure on the coke oven, and they also shrink enough so that they are easily removed from the coke oven. The properties of coke are influenced by moisture content and density.

The main use of coke is to make iron. The burning of coal to coke produces carbon monoxide. A touch at the bottom of the furnace allows impurities to flow out of the furnace. This, coupled with the fact that many harmful impurities come from heating the coal is the reason why there is so much pollution that comes from the creation of coke.

Pollution prevention in coke making is focused on reducing emissions from the coke oven. There are many ways to help reduce pollution. One way is to improve the quality of coal feed, so that the coke produced is of higher quality. This helps reduce emissions of sulfur oxide and other pollutants. Another way is to use enclosed conveyors for the coal and coke handling. Also, use many windbreaks and reduce the drop distances. Using higher quality of coal helps reduce the time it takes to convert it into coke, it also helps reduce fuel consumption.

Gate Valve vs Ball Valve

How They Work The most common flow control valves on the market are gate valves and ball valves. They are commonly used to regulate the flow of liquids and gases. Despite the fact that they are used in similar situations, there are a few key differences between these two valves. The differences between gate and ball valves are discussed, as well as how to choose between them.

Operation Differences Between Gate Valve and Ball Valve

Ball Valve

A Ball Valve employs a rotary ball with a bore and a stem. When the stem-attached handle is turned, the ball rotates to open or close the valve. Because the handle only needs a 90° turn (quarter turn) to allow or block the flow of the media, this valve is also known as a quarter turn valve. When the handle is parallel to the pipe, the valve is open; when it is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve is closed.

Gate Valve

A gate valve controls the flow of media through the use of a gate. A gate is a solid disc structure attached to the stem. The gate is raised to open the valve and returned to its original position to close it. The valve is accompanied by a bonnet, which controls the position of the gate when rotated. This valve is also known as a multi turn valve because it requires more than a 360° turn to fully open or close.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Gate Valve and Ball Valve

Ball Valve

Ball Valve – Close the valve with a quarter turn (90° turn) for a quick shut-off. A water hammer may occur if the door is opened and closed quickly. The position of the handle indicates whether the valve is open or closed. Typically more expensive than a gate valve with identical specifications. To accommodate a quarter-turn handle, it takes up more space than a gate valve. Bore sizes less than 2″ are better suited. Even when used after a long period of time, it maintains a tight seal. Durable and resistant to damage

Gate Valve

Gate Valve – Slow shut off because the valve requires more than a 360° turn to close. The water hammer is reduced by opening and closing slowly. It is difficult to determine whether the valve is open or closed. Typically less expensive than a ball valve with the same specifications. It takes up less installation space than a ball valve. Better suited for bore sizes greater than 2″. Leaks more easily than a ball valve. The valve stem can corrode, making the valve less durable.

Selection Criteria

• Ports: A gate valve has two ports, whereas a ball valve can have multiple ports.
• Flow Capacity: Gate valves are typically available in larger diameters, they can provide greater flow capacity than ball valves.
• Opening and closing speed: Because of its quarter turn on/off operation, a ball valve is better suited for applications that require faster opening and closing speeds or during emergencies. A gate valve requires more than a 360° turn to operate, making it slower than a ball valve.
• Sealing: A ball valve provides a tight seal and has completely shut-off characteristics as compared to a gate valve. Therefore, ball valves are better suited for applications like natural gas where a proper seal long-term is important.
• Pressure: Ball valves and gate valves are both appropriate for low pressure applications. A gate valve, on the other hand, is better suited for high-pressure applications. This is due to the ball valve’s rapid opening and closing, which can result in a water hammer.
• Cost: In general, a ball valve is more expensive than a gate valve with the same specifications. A ball valve, on the other hand, is typically more durable and requires less maintenance than a gate valve. As a result, a ball valve may be more cost-effective in the long run.

Common Applications of Gate Valve and Ball Valve

Gate valves are generally found in older plumbing systems and in applications where a frequent shut-off is not required. Large water supply lines use gate valves due to their straight flow path and fewer flow restrictions.

Ball valves are increasingly used in new plumbing systems with frequent shut-off requirements.

Gate valves are used for application with slurries and viscous media because they are easier to clean and maintain.

Ball valves are not desirable because they are difficult to clean, and the slurry particles may damage the rotary ball.

Which is better gate valve or ball valve?

It depends on the application. A ball valve is better suited for smaller flow rates, anything requiring more than 2 ports, or for durability/sealing concerns. A gate valve is typically cheaper, better for higher flow rates, and requires a smaller installation space.

What is the difference between gate valve and ball valve?

The main difference is in the operation. A gate valve moves a solid disk up and down to open/close the orifice. A ball valve rotates a ball (the orifice) with a bore in it 90 degrees to open/close the valve.

How do you know if ball valve open or closed?

how do we know if we are going to get our dreamy beer to flood into our awaiting pint glasses to quench our eager thirst? We need to know whether the valve is open or closed.

The majority of valves require a handle to turn the valve from the closed position to the open position. This diagram shows us what this looks like on a simple ball valve.

Usually, when someone asks if a valve is open or closed, they’re not really that interested in the orientation of the valve but what they really want to know is, is there flow passing through?

In order to tell if the valve is open or closed, the general rule is, if the handle is switched 90deg to the flow, it is off. As you can see from the diagram above, if the handle is in line with the flow path, it is on. Simple. Of course, this only applies to manual-style valves such as the ball valve in the above diagram.
