Can Valves be Installed Upside Down?

Butterfly valves are commonly used in many applications. This is due to the efficiency of the butterfly valves’ mechanism. There is an increase in demand when it comes to a butterfly valve. Currently, butterfly valves have become the first choice for many people in different working conditions. But when it comes to their installations there are a lot of people who do not understand or have little information about this. In this article, we will be answering if the butterfly valve can be installed in a backward direction.

Can I install a Butterfly Valve in an upside-down direction?

The answer to this is no, and the reason is so simple.

The butterfly valve has a vital sealing role having a valve seat as well as the valve shaft portion of the packing. If the butterfly valve is connected vertically or horizontally to the pipeline, the media will have very little erosion upon the filler. In case the butterfly valve is installed upside down, the media will flow towards the filler eroding the filler, thus destroying the performance of the seal and hence can lead to leakage of the butterfly valve. Any leakage of poisonous and harmful media will eventually have a great effect on the surroundings.

ZECO Valve is the top-ranking China double offset butterfly valve manufacturer.

The API 607 fire-safe high-performance butterfly valve is also in ZECO Valve product range. Our fire-safe butterfly valve is certificated by American Petroleum Institute (API) according to API 607 standards.

ZECO Valve also builds up a dustless workshop to produce ultra-clean valves for some critical working conditions such as the nuclear industry, semiconductor industry, etc.

Can I install a Ball Valve in an upside-down direction?

Ball valves occupy a dominant position in the valve industry. The application range of the ball valve is very wide because the quarter-turn ball valve is a good choice.

Its structure is easy to operate and requires almost no maintenance. In addition, full bore ball valves are also suitable for applications requiring maximum flow and minimum pressure drop.

The valve can be installed in other directions, but any installation that deviates from the vertical is a compromise. It is not recommended to install it upside down, as this will cause dirt to accumulate on the valve cap.

Is the ball valve directional?

The ball is round, so the direction is not important. If a valve must be installed in a certain direction, an arrow should be cast on the valve body to show the direction of flow.

Can I install other valves in an upside-down direction?

Globe valves, throttle valves, pressure relief valves, check valves and other valves have directionality. If the throttle valve is reversed, it will affect the use effect and life. If the pressure relief valve does not work at all if the check valve even causes danger.

General valves have direction marks on the valve body; if not, they should be correctly identified according to the working principle of the valve. The valve chamber of the globe valve is asymmetrical from left to right, so the fluid should pass through the valve mouth from bottom to top so that the fluid resistance is small (determined by the shape), the opening is labor-saving (due to the medium pressure up), and the medium does not press the packing after closing, which is convenient for maintenance. That’s why globe valves can’t be reversed.

Other valves also have their own characteristics. The position of valve installation must be easy to operate; even if it is temporarily difficult to install, it should also be considered for the long-term work of operators. Best valve handwheel and chest alignment (generally 1.2 meters from the operating floor), so that the opening and closing of the valve is more labor-saving. The hand wheel of the landing valve should be upward, not inclined, in order to avoid awkward operation. The valves of the wall machines and equipment should also leave room for operators to stand. It is very unsafe to avoid elevation operation, especially acid-base, toxic medium, etc. Gate valves should not be inverted (i.e. handwheel down), otherwise the medium will remain in the valve cover space for a long time, which is easy to corrode the stem, and is taboo for some process requirements. It is very inconvenient to replace fillers at the same time.
