<p>A pressure Relief Valve is a safety device designed to protect a pressurized vessel or system during an overpressure event.</p>



<p>An overpressure event refers to any condition which would cause pressure in a vessel or system to increase beyond the specified design pressure or maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP).</p>



<p>The primary purpose of a pressure Relief Valve is protection of life and property by venting fluid from an overpressurized vessel.</p>



<p>Many electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic systems exist today to control fluid system variables, such as pressure, temperature and flow. Each of these systems requires a power source of some type, such as electricity or compressed air in order to operate. A pressure Relief Valve must be capable of operating at all times, especially during a period of power failure when system controls are nonfunctional. The sole source of power for the pressure Relief Valve, therefore, is the process fluid.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Spring Loaded Pressure Relief Valve</h2>



<p>The basic spring loaded pressure Relief Valve has been developed to meet the need for a simple, reliable, system actuated device to provide overpressure protection.</p>



<p>The image on the right shows the construction of a spring loaded pressure Relief Valve.</p>



<p>The Valve consists of a Valve inlet or nozzle mounted on the pressurized system, a disc held against the nozzle to prevent flow under normal system operating conditions, a spring to hold the disc closed, and a body/Bonnet to contain the operating elements. The spring load is adjustable to vary the pressure at which the Valve will open.</p>



<p>When a pressure Relief Valve begins to lift, the spring force increases. Thus system pressure must increase if lift is to continue. For this reason pressure Relief Valves are allowed an overpressure allowance to reach full lift. This allowable overpressure is generally 10% for Valves on unfired systems. This margin is relatively small and some means must be provided to assist in the lift effort.</p>



<p>Most pressure Relief Valves, therefore, have a secondary control chamber or huddling chamber to enhance lift. As the disc begins to lift, fluid enters the control chamber exposing a larger area of the disc to system pressure.</p>



<p>This causes an incremental change in force which overcompensates for the increase in spring force and causes the Valve to open at a rapid rate. At the same time, the direction of the fluid flow is reversed and the momentum effect resulting from the change in flow direction further enhances lift. These effects combine to allow the Valve to achieve maximum lift and maximum flow within the allowable overpressure limits. Because of the larger disc area exposed to system pressure after the Valve achieves lift, the Valve will not close until system pressure has been reduced to some level below the set pressure. The design of the control chamber determines where the closing point will occur.</p>



<p>The difference between the set pressure and the closing point pressure is called blowdown and is usually expressed as a percentage of set pressure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Safety Valve vs. Relief Valve</h2>



<p>While both terms refer to valves used to release pressure from a pressurized system, their technical definitions are a bit different. In general, the term relief valve refers to a valve within a pressurized system that is used to control pressure for the optimal functionality of the system. Relief valves are designed to help your facility avoid system failures, and protect equipment from overpressurized conditions.</p>



<p>The term safety valve, on the other hand, refers to pressure valves that are designed to protect people, property, and processes. In other words, the term safety valve refers to a failsafe, last resort valve that will release pressure to prevent a catastrophe, usually in the event that all other relief valves have failed to adequately control pressure within a system.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Do Safety and Relief Valves Do the Same Thing?</h2>



<p>The general purpose of both safety valves and relief valves are the same. Both are pressure relief valves, and they are designed to let off pressure in any situation where a system becomes overpressurized. That said, relief valves and safety valves do function slightly differently:</p>



<p>Relief Valves are designed to control pressure in a system, most often in fluid or compressed air systems. These valves open in proportion to the increase in system pressure. This means they don’t fly all the way open when the system is slightly overpressure. Instead, they open gradually, allowing the system to return to the preset pressure level. When that level is reached, the valve shuts again.</p>

<p>Pressure-control valves are found in practically every pneumatic and hydraulic system. They help in a variety of functions, from keeping system pressures below a desired limit to maintaining a set pressure level in the part of a circuit. Different types of pressure control valves include relief, reducing, sequence, counterbalance, safety, and unloading. All of them are typically closed valves, except for reducing valves, which are usually open. For most of these valves, a restriction is necessary to produce the required pressure control. One exception is the externally piloted unloading valve, which depends on an external signal for its actuation, which normally comes from a digital pressure regulator. In certain applications, like ventilators and anesthesia machines, the flow must be consistent at all times. Variations in the flow of gases can lead to serious injury or death. That’s why control valves are so important.</p>

<p>Most pneumatic and hydraulic power systems are designed to operate within a defined pressure range. This range is a function of the forces the actuators in the system must generate to do the required work. Without controlling these forces, the power components and expensive equipment could get damaged. Relief valves make it possible to avoid this hazard. They are the safeguards that limit maximum pressure in a system by diverting excess gases when the pressure gets too high. The pressure at which a relief valve first opens to allow fluid to flow through is known as cracking pressure. When the valve is bypassing its full rated flow, it is in a state of full-flow pressure. The difference between full-flow and cracking pressure is sometimes known as the pressure differential or the pressure override.</p>



<p>In some cases, this pressure override is not objectionable. It can be a disadvantage if it wastes power via gas lost through the valve prior to reaching the maximum setting. This can allow maximum system pressure to exceed the ratings of the other components.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sequence Valve</h3>



<p>Due to the pressure change in the hydraulic system, the sequence valve can control the sequence of actuators. The structure and working principle of the sequence valve are basically the same as the relief valve, and the only difference is that the exit of the sequence valve is no longer used to connect tanks. Therefore, the internal leaking oil can not channel directly to the oil chamber with a pipeline but uses a special pipeline instead.</p>

<p>These valves are typically closed and are often used to maintain a set pressure in a portion of a circuit, usually to counterbalance a weight. The style of valve is ideal for counterbalancing an external force or to counteract a weight like in a press to keep it from free-falling. The valve’s primary port is connected to the rod end of a cylinder, and the secondary port is connected to the directional control valve. The pressure is set slightly higher than what’s required to keep the load from free-falling. When pressurized fluid flows to the cylinder’s cap end, the cylinder extends and increases pressure in the rod end and shifts the main spool in the valve. This creates a path that allows fluid to flow through the secondary port to the directional control valve and reservoir. As the load is raised, the integral check valve opens to allow the cylinder to retract freely. If it is necessary to relieve back pressure at the cylinder and increase the force at the bottom of the stroke, the counterbalance valve can be operated remotely. When the cylinder extends, the valve must open and its secondary port is connected to the reservoir. When the cylinder retracts, it doesn’t matter that load pressure is felt in the drain passage because the check valve bypasses the valve’s spool.</p>

<p>If the pressure inside the control chamber is put in communication with the atmosphere or some other lower pressure zone, the upstream pressure will act on the obturator, pushing it upwards allowing the complete opening of the valve.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valve-isolated-from-the-line">Valve Isolated From the Line</h4>



<p>Should the control chamber be isolated from the line pressure and the rest of the circuitry the valve will remain in the same position, therefore producing the head loss corresponding to such opening percentage.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valve-closing">Valve Closing</h4>



<p>If the control chamber is put in communication with the upstream pressure, thanks to the difference in the area between the upper flat with the diaphragm, larger than the obturator underneath, the valve will close completely.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valve-opening-1">Valve Opening</h4>



<p>When the main valve is required to modulate a restriction (R) is needed between the upstream line pressure and the control chamber, in addition to a regulator (F) on the circuit. Should the latter open completely pressure inside the control chamber will be put in communication with downstream, allowing for the full opening of the main valve.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valve-modulating">Valve Modulating</h4>



<p>If the flow regulator (F) is throttled pressure will build up between it and the control chamber, causing the valve to modulate accordingly to an intermediate position. This is obtained thanks to the pressure difference created by the restriction (R) and to the difference in the section between the upper flat acting on the diaphragm and the obturator.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valve-closing-1">Valve Closing</h4>



<p>Should the flow regulator (F) be completely closed, the upstream line pressure is all diverted to the main control chamber. The mobile block is moved by the force exerted on the upper diaphragm flat pushing the obturator down onto the seat, interrupting the flow through the main valve.</p>

<p>Altitude control valve is designed to open, allowing flow into a reservoir or elevated storage tank (tank fill), and close drip tight when a high water level is achieved. It controls water level by remotely sensing static tank head pressure through a field-installed sensing line, opens when the water level is below the adjustable set-point, and closes drip tight when the level is above the adjustable set-point.</p>

<p>Remote float control valve is designed to close drip tight when the water level reaches the adjustable high-level set-point, and open fully when the water level is below the adjustable low-level set-point to increase tank circulation. High and low levels are separately adjustable by positioning stop collars on the float rod(s) at the desired opening and closing set-points. If desired, the on-off action of the valve can be reversed by modifying the hydraulic connections of the On-Off Float Pilot. The Float Pilot may be either valve or remote mounted.</p>

<p>Surge Anticipating Valve is an off-line, hydraulically operated, diaphragm actuated valve. The valve, sensing line pressure, opens in response to the pressure drop associated with abrupt pump stoppage. The pre-opened valve dissipates the returning high-pressure wave, eliminating the surge. The surge anticipating valve smoothly closes drip tight as quickly as the relief feature allows while preventing closing surge. The valve also relieves excessive system pressure.</p>

<p>Flow control valve prevents excessive flow by limiting flow to a preselected maximum rate, regardless of changing line pressure. They are hydraulically operated, pilot-controlled, diaphragm valves. The pilot control responds to the differential pressure produced across an orifice plate installed downstream of the valve. Accurate control is assured as very small changes in the controlling differential pressure produce immediate corrective action of the main valve. Flow rate adjustments are made by turning an adjusting screw on the pilot control.</p>

<p>PSV &#8211; Pressure Safety Valves are usually used as a final safety solution when all previous systems fail to prevent any further pressure accumulation and protect vessels from rupture due to overpressure by their designed action. Armatec supplies both pilot operated safety valves as well as spring actuated with or without supplementary loading system. The latter can guarantee better tightness up to set pressure allowing higher operating pressures of the plant.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Spring-operated conventional safety valve</h3>



<p>In a Spring loaded Pressure Safety Valve the closing force or spring force is applied by a helical spring which is compressed by an adjusting screw. The spring force is transferred via the spindle onto the disc. The disc seals against the nozzle as long as the spring force is larger than the force created by the pressure at the inlet of the valve.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Pilot operated (Disturbed) safety valve.</h3>



<p>Pilot Operated Safety Valve is controlled by process medium. To achieve this, the system pressure is applied to the pilot valve (= control component for the main valve) via the pressure pickup. The pilot valve then uses the dome above the main valve piston to control the opening and closing of the main valve.</p>
